Does lots of stop and go traffic change average time
to replace a timing belt?
Question : "I
saw the Q and A about timing belts. My question
is a little different. I have a 1999 Honda Civic. It
has about 25,000 miles on it. I am being told that
I need to replace the timing belt at 5 yrs. I live
in Az and drive in stop and go traffic 90% of the time.
Your answer to the previous question seemed to be that
mileage, not time, is the deciding factor. That reader
had more miles and only 2 years. I know if that belt
breaks I am in big trouble but do not want to have
to pay to have it
replaced before I need to."
Honda
recommends the 1999 Civic (EX) timing belt be replaced
at 105,000 miles. At an average of 15,000 miles/per
year, that would translate to 7 years
(severe service interval).
Based on that, I would be recommending it at 105K
or 7 years, but not earlier.
