Tucson, Ariz., April 15, 2008 – On Friday, April 18, AAA Arizona and the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) are teaming up to celebrate the 3rd anniversary of the Green Shop program and Tucson’s newest Green Shop. The event will showcase how Tucson’s Green Shops are doing their part to improve the environment and change the way motorists think about auto repair facilities.
At the event, media will have the opportunity to:
- Take an eco-tour of Tucson’s newest Green Shop, which will provide a unique opportunity to see the environmentally conscious practices that differentiate these shops from others.
- Find out how much a Green Shop reuses, recycles and ultimately reduces their environmental impact.
- See a display of uncommon recyclable auto parts and materials.
“When most people think of an auto repair facility, they envision oily rags and stained floors,” said Don Nunnari, vice president of membership products and services for AAA Arizona. “Once you visit a Green Shop, you will realize that image could not be farther from the truth. These shops take pride in their appearance, performance and ecological impact.”
“Tucson has been a real leader when it comes to Green Shops in Arizona,” said ADEQ Director Steve Owens. “These auto repair facilities deserve a lot of recognition for taking such a proactive approach toward environmental stewardship. These auto shops are sending a clear message that protecting the environment makes good business sense too.”
Green Shops earn certification from AAA Arizona as a result of their commitment to voluntary pollution prevention and conservation measures recommended by the ADEQ. To date, 15 auto facilities across the state have received this designation – 10 of which are located in the Tucson area.
The media event will also kick-off AAA Arizona’s 8th annual Great Battery Roundup, an event that aims to raise awareness about battery recycling. During the “roundup” the auto club encourages motorists to bring old car batteries that might be lying around their backyard or garage to a participating Approved Auto Repair facility where they will be recycled at no charge to the consumer. For every battery collected between April 18 and 25, AAA Arizona will donate $4.00 to Tucson Clean and Beautiful.
